KEEN Ambassador Avery Jenkins Supporting the University of California – Santa Cruz Disc Golf Team

Disc golf is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, especially in the surf city of Santa Cruz, CA. The recent 2011 Disc Golf World Championships were even hosted in the Monterey Bay Area last year. Recently, the University of California – Santa Cruz Disc Golf Team qualified for the first time for the 2012 National Collegiate Disc Golf Championships in Augusta, GA. They’ll represent one of 40 college disc golf teams from all over the country participating in the event.

This year, KEEN Ambassador Avery Jenkins donated $1000 on behalf of KEEN in an effort to support this growth and expansion of disc sports in Santa Cruz throughout the high school and college levels. The funds were used to purchase competition jerseys for the team and to help with the travel costs to Georgia. Promoting collegiate disc golf in Santa Cruz is valuable for the sport as it entices players to the university and also helps grow the overall number of competitors throughout the world.

Kevin “Skippy Jammer” Givens, the UCSC Sports Club Director, had the following to say in response to Avery’s donation:

As the Sports Club Director at University of California-Santa Cruz, the Disc Golf Club has been an ongoing project for me for quite some time. In recent years, we’ve seen some great strides forward and have begun to realize the potentiality of the club. This past year, the club received considerable contributions from Avery Jenkins. His contributions to the club are many: Coaching from an elite level athlete and World Champion, adding vision and inspiration to the club resulting in their attendance at the Collegiate Disc Golf National Championships, and last but not least his donation of $1000 in support of the club. Avery has a rare gift of inspiring and instilling a vision for young disc golf enthusiasts. Due to his direct involvement with the club we are moving forward with the creation of a 9-Hole course on campus, a course that will be played by future generations far beyond our involvement with the club. The club is deeply indebted to Avery for his assistance and involvement. Thanks Avery, and GO SLUGS!
